We recommend Glamping

Glamping as defined by the oxford Living dictionary as "A form of camping involving accommodation and facilities more luxurious than those associated with traditional camping."

‘glamping is likely to satisfy any city slicker seeking a little refuge in nature—without foregoing any of life's luxuries’

I was introduced to the idea of glamping by my best friend Jay when he suggested we go to Sand River in the Eastern Cape for our New Year’s Vaycay. The Road trip was epic with its bumps along the road. I would not change a thing that happened on that trip for the lessons learned cannot be learned in any other way but through experience. And the friendships forged will forever live in memory stored for those days one needs a lesson in authenticity and art.

Thank you Sand River for creating a space that is fun vibrant and fresh and thank you for sharing it with all of us who seek to be inspired.

Meet the lovely couple behind Sand River Gateway and Brixtonfoods.

I grew up in small towns like Elliot and Graaff Reinet as the youngest of 5 children, I spent a lot of time outside on farms and in my garden and I think this is where my creativity has come from. I studied Glass Art in NMM University and am now using that creativity in my food company.

I am definitely inspired by nature, the intricate lace of it and I am also so inspired by humans. The way we are all so similar and yet so different in how we think about things and what our life experiences are. Also the incredible variety of creativity that people come up with around the world.

I would like to leave behind a place that has helped to develop the people around it and perhaps more abroad. An inspiration to how one could live.

I have always been adventurous, love seeing new places, I am at home in the ocean riding waves on anything that will float. I did an LLB at NMMU however never pursued a legal career. I enjoy philosophy and am very self-analytical, I love to delve into the questions about why we are here and the nature of existence.

I’m inspired by the raw beauty of nature, the complexity of life and a world of almost infinite possibilities. I’d like for people to want to learn more about the systems and institutions and limit human prosperity, the principles that are used to divide us and to overcome them.

We run a tented camp just 45 minutes from Port Elizabeth where we are trying to live and promote a sustainable way of life. SRG sleeps 21 people in tented rooms and in a dorm cabin. We use solar and gas as our power and thereby encourage guests to really just relax and enjoy nature. There are a number of hikes and walks on the property and some waterfall hikes just off the property. We also run holistic living retreats with an emphasis on yoga.

Brixtonfoods is our food company that we run and focus on Plant based foods we sell at the Valley Market in Port Elizabeth and cater all the food at SRG too.

Our vision is to move towards a sustainable existence, we want to start a huge garden and will hopefully be able to run it as a educational part of the Getaway as well as encouraging guests to grow their own vegetables at home too. If you have a small piece of ground or even just a balcony, there is no reason why you shouldn't grow something edible for yourself. We also want to move towards running more retreats and healthy lifestyle getaways where you learn about say vegetables, how to grow them, cook them and how to compost the cuttings.
